Headmaster’s canings at my modest city grammar school were given in private unless there were two or more culprits there together then they might be caned in front of each other.
All the above comments relate to the mid 1950s to late 1950s We must remember that in the past the wearing of uniform for schools and many workplaces was commonplace. This related to when in WW2 virtual everyone wore a uniform of one type or another. There was great pride in wearing a uniform back then. Photographers were often asked to take portraits of people in uniform. This included nurses, postmen, even bus drivers and railway workers who wore their uniforms with great pride. Most youth organisations wore uniforms too.
Modern day ‘uniforms’ still exist but tend to be worn by choice and involve jeans and football kit!
