In the past makers’ names on clothing was on labels discreetly inside clothing. Sports clothing in particular now not only carries makers’ names but also carries the football clubs sponsorship advertising. Home and away football shirts often changing annually. For some youngsters to wear last year’s football strip can lead to ridicule from other lads.
The arrival of jeans in the 1950s changed everything. Jeans were seen as just working wear, early jeans even carried a ruler pocket down one leg! Jeans are now seen as everyday wear with people wearing them as both everyday clothes and often for ‘best’!
All this is drifting away from the main subject of school corporal punishment here. I remember when school trousers were made from heavier flannel material. Then the new fangled Terylene material arrived. These were far thinner than the old flannel trousers. Did anyone realise that a caning across the new material could hurt much more!
