We were never explicitly told that certain behaviours would lead to this as an inevitable consequence but it didn’t take long to work it out. The most obvious and most common reason for getting the cane was if you were caught smoking on school premises. After that, an inevitable caning would ensue if you failed to attend a detention, played truant (probably viewed more seriously than in many schools) or were caught bullying. There may have been others such as being very rude to a teacher but those were so rare you couldn’t put it on the ‘automatic’ list. Fighting would very much depend on the perceived seriousness and certainly wasn’t automatically deserving of a caning.
