It would have been less easy to guarantee caning by the headmaster. At the time I’d have bet that bringing the school into serious disrepute would have done it. But for that in some circumstances you might have simply been expelled. People sometimes ask why boys would accept a caning and expulsion. In a city where the school was heavily integrated into civic and commercial life future education and/or career might hinge on what the school’s report said about you. And that might depend on taking your medicine and making a new start without making a fuss.
