But then she surprised me-she said, “Mother Frances just called, and she told me that you took it like a big girl.” (That was a lie, but I thank you for it, Mother Frances.) Then my mother said, “I want you to come into my bedroom.” I followed her in, and she closed the door. My mother said, “I want you to pull down your underpants and lift your skirt.” A look of alarm must have crossed my face, because she said, “Child, have I ever hit you? I need to see what your bum looks like. No modesty now, come on.” So I dropped my underpants and pulled up my skirt.
