The bottom is different in the way it absorbs the impact and I agree that even though very painful, it is easier to tolerate, especially lower down on the backside. I think the pain is worse when you are bent over and the cane is used higher on the bottom, so that there is a lesser thickness of muscle protecting the bone structure.
