Thanks to the enthusiastic attention of an experienced administrator, I now have a much clearer understanding of the deterrent effect caning had in the days it was administered as part of school discipline.
The six proper punishment strokes that I received over thin shorts on Wednesday caused involuntary gasps and an overwhelming urge to rise from the bent-over position. It wasn’t absolute agony, but it was very sharp indeed. Had I been thirteen – with no choice in the matter – (let’s not forget that as an adult I had requested it and could have backed out at any time) – I have no doubt it would have required immense fortitude to take it. Nevertheless, the initial pain soon subsided.
