Only my secondary school had caning. Quite often by the Prefects, who were limited to three strokes, and occasionally by the Headmaster, who wasn’t. Although there was one occasion involving each where in theory I might have been caned, in reality I never came anywhere near it. The only detentions I served were a couple of whole form collective punishments for something or other. I never came anywhere near an individual detention. At that school they went down on your record, and mine had to be whiter than white!
Most regulars here will have no difficulty in predicting my choice had I ever been in a position where it was offered, but I’ll attempt a proper justification!
