Whenever the memory of school CP occurs in female conversation, it is so often accompanied with a fear so tangible, that one gets the impression of trauma.

My Mother relates her one time in detention (mixed, state, late 50’s). Now this was no big thing, an automatic punishment for lateness, etc., and involved relatively large number of pupils. Because of the common nature of this punishment, attendance was noted by each child signing out of detention.

Mom was a ‘good’ girl, so she had no experience of the routine, and forgot to sign out. Guess what the penalty was for missing your detention? I think that every time she looks back at her school days she re-lives the absolute terror that she felt at the possibility of being summoned for the cane that next day (didn’t happen).
