It was a very rural area, and she’d missed the school bus, which was normally her only way of getting to school. Immediately she got in the car she told me, without any prompting or questions on my part, that she’d get belted if we didn’t get there on time. I was quite shocked. At that time I hadn’t got a clue what ‘belting’ would entail, and I didn’t ask, but whatever it was it sounded rather harsh for missing a bus! I doubt very much that if I’d been giving a lift to a girl in England under similar circumstances she’d have told me that she’d be slippered if we didn’t get there in time. This wouldn’t be because she was reticent about it, but because in England she wouldn’t have been punished so severely.
