Girls in these schools were targeted by both male and female teachers. Without a doubt, the motivation of the female teachers was pure jealousy. They could beat (or cause to be beaten) their young rivals simply for the crime of being young and pretty and wishing to show it. Rules about make-up, jewelry, smoking, and uniform/clothing, were designed to hit at any attempt a girl pupil made to feel grown-up. And girls in these schools, with zero thought of exam success or further education, were going to want to feel grown-up far sooner than their counterparts in ‘better’ schools.
