Surely it was more than possible for kids to have justifiable reasons for lateness. Did you ever bother to ask them?
My friends pupils were usually the children of very down to earth rural folk and farmers.
Even up to now one has to expect that when the harvest comes in then the farm comes first, sometimes kids just could not come to school.
This is becoming easier as the Poles now do graft for half nothing.
