Most boys, in my experience, cry if they get six of the best, and a fair proportion of those boys are a wreck for a fairly short period of time – minutes, maybe up to half an hour or a little longer. I don’t normally send boys back to their fellow pupils during that period, allowing them time to recover if they need it, and it’s very, very rare I need to wait anywhere over an hour, before he’s composed and more or less back to normal, and more often it’s much, much less than that.
bottom canings back when I handed such canings out, was meant to be an extremely severe punishment. such punishments are described as routine in certain periods of his teaching – I never, personally, experienced a regime where these punishments were totally routine either as a boy or as a Master, although I did receive a couple of such canings myself, and administered a small number of them.
