As you say it was a private boarding school, I wonder if it was the Duke of Kent School.If this post is true this matter should be reported at once as such things were not allowed in 1970, nor as far as I know at any time. If a head had doubts about how hard he had caned a boy he would make a casual appearance in the changing room when boys were showering.This may be to see if he had done it too hard, or if over trousers it had been done hard enough and extra clothing had not been worn.
