Some of my contemporaries, of both sexes, were not so lucky, as the cane was the normal punishment of last resort. Despite this I remain convinced that the corporal punishment regimes in UK schools in the late 1940s and 1950s enabled a great deal to be attained educationally at a relatively smaller cost than is now now required to achieve what are often demonstrably lesser results.
I have always maintained that a return of school CP would be no bad thing, and would greatly assist those children whose education is now blighted by the apparent inability of teachers to have recourse to sanctions sufficient to keep the minority of troublemakers and lesson disrupters in order. This isn’t going to happen any time soon, but if it ever did this thread bears witness to a requirement for an absolute limit of 6 strokes of the cane, and that over normal clothing!
