Boys often wore big brothers shirts and these were more like night shirts and if it were not for his trousers would be right down to his knees or lower. The same also applied to vests if boys were wearing them. These were hard to hitch up out of the way so that the boy’s bottom was exposed and did not fall back down as he wriggled about on feeling the effects of the cane. Boys who were going to be caned on their bottoms were required to strip to the waist before going to the table. Once at the table they undid the belt, cord or braces that were holding up their trousers, which then in most cases fell to their ankles. They reached over and took the caning. I never pulled clothing down and was something down by the boy himself.
