Others are less certain as to why they feel they way they do. I am, without any doubt, in the former category. Had it not been for one particular event that occurred during my third week of full-time teaching, I would probably never have discovered whatever it is that lies deep in the subconscious that generates these feelings that some of us have in relation to CP.
It was my first (and only) full-time teaching job. When I first joined the school, I was told of the punishment rules (cane on hands or bottom for boys and either cane on hand or slipper on the bottom for girls) and given my own cane. I wasn’t given a slipper but was told that if I wanted one, I could get it from the gymnasium store room. I didn’t bother doing so because, frankly, I had no intention of using corporal punishment on either boys or girls.
