There was one teacher who would often summon miscreant pupils to the staff room for their punishments during break times rather than punish them in his classroom during or immediately after a lesson. He would take the pupil into a smaller room within the staff room and beat them while they bent over with their hands placed flat on the seat of a wooden chair. I witnessed this twice during my first two weeks at the school as he never bothered to close the door.
I found it all rather distasteful and not a little disturbing, and certainly derived no pleasure from the scenes I witnessed. But that was until the following week. Those two pupils I saw him caning were both boys, but on the next occasion, it was a girl he had summoned to the staff room.
