In boarding I cannot recall the exact last time it was applied, but it reduced from an almost daily application in the 70s to perhaps half a dozen times a term by the end of the 80s. But, significantly, the slipper outlived the cane by several years, and rightly so: it was always possible to deliver a slippering that made a smart point but did no damage, and left no real ill feeling, whereas the cane by definition was more severe.
