I can’t imagine that sneakers or trainers would be much good as “slippers”, they might well bruise but they wouldn’t have the sting they were after. Certainly our male PE teacher used the tried and tested large well-worn rubber gym shoe, which we did indeed call a pump for some reason. It was white, the rule was white pumps in the gym, black ones for outdoors. I don’t know where it came from but I imagine there would have been some creep of a prefect only too willing to donate one upon leaving the school, which would explain why it looked around size 10+.
