The headmaster of the school also used a cane and he must have caned in front of other pupils. My father and his pals with their wonderful array of nicknames went in for a bit of `baiting` to amuse their fellow pupils. When called out for a caning they would goad the head by being uncooperative. He would get so angry his eyes would bulge, the idea was to try to be the one who actually got his eyes to pop out! According to dad they would end up getting an absolute thrashing but it was worth it for the amusement it caused! I gather this only happened when they had an audience so I presume must have been during some sort of assembly. I think Dad still regrets he never got to see those eyes pop
