As a keen cricket fan I have been reading a book called ” Nottinghamshire Cricket and Cricketers ” published in 1923. There are some very entertaining tales in the book, but one in particular struck me ( no pun intended).
In around 1855 a Notts player called Tom Davis ( 1827-1898) was so upset by a catch that he had dropped, which cost Nottinghamshire the match, that in a contemporary account, I shall quote ” So keen a cricketer was Tom, that once when he dropped a catch at a critical point of the game,he, after the innings were over, requested one of his own sides to inflict corporal punishment on him.
