Back in the 1960s I was speaking to a girl who worked in Edinburgh and asked her if she had ever experienced the tawse at school. She said that she had not because she was living in England during her schooldays and indeed there was no CP at her girls only school. She confided, however, that her brother went to a boarding school where CP was used but his only experience was to be whacked on his bottom with a cricket bat by his housemaster on one occasion.
