This is an area where the data for Australia is clearer than for the UK, because in this country abolition occurred at different times in state schools in different states. In every single state, as corporal punishment was eliminated from an option in state schools, behaviour among boys deteriorated. The fact is, while not all boys need this to be an option, there’s a significant core who do. And it’s very hard to deal with them without it.
