This wasn’t necessarily the case in Scotland, which although having a fearsome tradition of belting kids, did so on the hands, usually in public and where girls were certainly not exempt. Unless Scotland is full of middle-aged women who were somehow irreparably psychologically damaged by being punished as girls in the same way as miscreant boys were when they did the same things,
There are two ways of approaching it , and researchers have tried both. The Scottish council for educational research undertook work in the 70’s to see how frequently the belt was applied. Unlike England there were no recorded statistics because the belt was used daily but many teachers , one was carried by most teachers and heads etc., also held them ( often the more powerful versions). Only once was there an attempt to ‘log’ every belting and over one year across the public sector school in Edinburgh , the task was so enormous that when the ‘count ‘ hit 10,000 the project was abandoned.
