This wasn’t necessarily the case in Scotland, which although having a fearsome tradition of belting kids, did so on the hands, usually in public and where girls were certainly not exempt. Unless Scotland is full of middle-aged women who were somehow irreparably psychologically damaged by being punished as girls in the same way as miscreant boys were when they did the same things, any data on that one Dr D?!

In brief, though, it’s very hard to discuss Scotland, because it was atypical and there’s very little reliable data at all either on how much corporal punishment was really used there (as opposed to how much some people say it was) and with regards to mental health (too often it’s data has just been dumped in a box marked UK).
