That seems to be contradictory. How is “misbehaviour among girls is typically (though not universally) less prevalent than among boys” when “Girls have tended to both misbehave more and been punished more severely and readily when they did so – than boys”?

I apologise – I have to improve my proof reading. I meant to say: “Girls have tended to both misbehave less and been punished more severely and readily when they did so – than boys.”

It’s a mistake, not a contradiction.

Previously, boys were disciplined (in all senses) and girls were not. Overall discipline will reduce if you leave boys undisciplined too. The boys possibly thought they had a bit of “catching up” to do too. Misbehaviour by girls was (and is) often overlooked so that would account for some of the difference between the sexes.

Some, yes. Nowhere near all.
