There were a few studies in the 1970s where this did not occur and these studies were generally among the triggers for the initial surge in calls to ban corporal punishment that occurred around that time. But the problem was identified reasonably quickly, and since then, except where unscrupulous researchers have deliberately tried to construct studies to achieve particular results, nearly all research differentiates.

The common term used in research today is ‘normative corporal punishment’. A term that specifically refers to what is considered normal and routine, rather than the extremes.
