I didn’t mean it couldn’t be considered a punishment. I said “it couldn’t be used as a punishment for any particular offence because half the school could commit that offence yet not face that punishment.” Re-reading that, I realize that first “used” should have been “considered”. Sorry for any confusion. The point is, if ten children are all caught committing the same offence, all having the same antecedence, but only one is caned. Can that caning be truly said to be for the offence committed or was it really for something else? Possession of a ‘Y’ chromosome perhaps?
