As soon as people started looking at the genders separately, they realised there were differences, but by that stage there was 15-20 years of research data out there that most people had never actually read in detail and so didn’t realise it had these problems. They weren’t deliberate – they came about because people made an assumption that sex was a variable they could ignore. They were wrong.

No, I’m describing schools where the cane was used quite frequently, supposedly as a “standard” punishment for the type of offences I described. In reality though, it wasn’t the usual punishment for those offences because half the offenders were the “wrong” sex.
