When I started teaching, the canings I handed out were similar in nature to those at my last school. I was teaching in a very similar school environment (an elite school) and methods and approaches were similar. To begin with, as a junior teacher, most of the canings I administered were relatively minor ones – one to three strokes were the norm – but I handed out a lot of them. After a few years, encouraged as I’ve mentioned by my old Headmaster, I started using the cane a lot less, but as I got a little more senior, I was also expected to deal with more serious misbehaviour and consequently cane more severely in some cases.
