After I had left school and completed university and became a schoolmaster myself, he became something of a mentor to me. It wasn’t a particularly special arrangement he became a mentor to many of the men he’d taught as boys, I was at that stage just one among many. We became friends later on, but by that stage, I think he felt I’d moved beyond needing mentoring to the point where I could make my own mistakes without being shielded from them. In any event, quite early in my teaching career, I found myself in conversation with him about teaching and during that conversation, we turned to a discussion of discipline and I mentioned to him the way I used the cane – at that stage of my career, it was pretty much my standard approach to any type of indiscipline I perceived. I think I frankly shocked him.
