Students are often steered away from teaching into lucrative careers away from their talents and interests and into administrations just to pay off their student loans. The Obamas just paid them off from book royalties. Teachers write the disciplinary matrices so in a way they do have control and there is flexibility with parental involvement where alas they have no control. I do think there is more an upside in the higher grades for Administrators doing the paddling for reasons I have already articulated.
Whether a teacher punished a student or, if they did, how they punished them, has only a fairly casual relationship to whether or not they treated that student with respect. I’ve done my best to respect my students – I haven’t always succeeded as well as I could, but overall I think I’ve done a pretty good job of it. This is fairly separate though as to whether or not I punished them, whether or not I caned them.
