I don’t think I dreaded the cane, rather I was curious about it. The Head rarely caned but those who had experienced it said it hurt. The Deputy Head, who caned frequently, was far less respected for his caning abilities. On the one occasion when I found myself in trouble with him he said, after the usual lecture, “I’ll give you two”. He told me to put my hands on his desk, as he eased himself round the desk in the rather small room. Then he turned back my blazer, and there was a whirr and then a dull thud, uncomfortable rather than painful, followed almost immediately, by the second. I never saw the cane. Actually, I think I was a bit disappointed.
