On the one occasion it happened to me I had been taken by a teacher to the Deputy Head, who did most of the caning. I was given no opportunity to defend myself, he then lectured me for some time, which was far more effective than the caning, and then, in his usual way, leered at me and said “I’ll give you two.” If anything my apprehension was whether it would be on the hand and how many strokes.
