I think that the majority of boys at my school were spanked or slippered or caned at least once, some more often and a much smaller percentage frequently. As you say, for some bravado and for some an incurable but mistaken optimism that their chances of retribution were slim. Had you asked me at the time, I would have said that certain boys were picked on by certain teachers, but perhaps that is not or only partly true. I wonder if others had that kind of impression.
