Girls who were sent to the ‘Head’ for punishment were normally caned by the ‘Headmistress’ or the Girls ‘PT’ teacher.

The Headmaster remained in the room whilst the punishments were carried out.

I recall one incident when I was to be caned by the Headmaster and in the Q were two girls to be caned and three other boys.

With due chivalry, a policy of ‘Ladies first’ was adopted and both girls received their canings first.

The strokes of the cane and yells as the cane was applied were plainly heard by the rest of us waiting outside for our turn to be dealt with.

After the second girl was caned the headmistress left the study before the rest of us received our Cannings.
