Contrary to what many people think, corporal punishment wasn’t banned in all schools in England in the late 1980s. In fact this only happened in comprehensive schools. In public schools (which for those of you not in the know are basically privately run and funded schools) this did not happen until about 1998. I attended public school until the age of 17 before going to university and spankings were very much part of the discipline process and I received corporal punishments until I just turned 16. This particular incident took place when I was 13 though and although it wasn’t the only occasion that I was spanked at school it is one that was brought to mind recently by one of my friends who was also involved who reminisced about it.
