Uncle Reg often spoke of the canings that took place there, and I remember, as a child of about 10 or 11 being terrified by his stories. He told us how boys were caned for virtually any infractions of the rules. But what stuck in my mind as really cruel and sadistic, was that boys were often caned for bedwetting. The school was a boarding “prep” school, an there were often times when they wet the bed, especially new boys away from home for the first time. I remember him saying that any boy found with a wet bed in the morning was reported to the Housemaster, and would be up for a severe caning.
