The other thing I remember him saying was that canings were often done in the dormitory, at bed time, after “lights out” time. Those boys who were due to be caned, would therefore lie in bed quaking with fear and anticipation, knowing that the door would open at any moment, and the Housemaster would enter, with cane in hand. They would have to bend over the end of their bed, and be caned on the seat of their pyjamas, or even pull them down for a bare bottom caning.
