Yes, there were terrible punishments meted out if we go back through history, hungry children were sometimes hanged for stealing a loaf of bread. It doesn’t mean we should ban every punishment simply on those grounds – would you stop burglars being sent to prison because the Law has wrongfully jailed the innocent in the past?
Of course, it was wrong, criminally wrong, to cane prep school children for no good reason – especially for such things as bed-wetting – but it doesn’t follow that the cane had no place in education, that is an entirely different argument.
