Everyone needs deterrents, every driver has them (fines and bans), every worker has them(warning letters and sackings if the offence is repeated). Even schoolchildren have them (detentions and other sanctions – including expulsion!)
I, being of an age when we had the deterrent of the cane, know its effectiveness, especially on those kids who NEVER got it! What deterrent has the child who doesn’t turn up for detentions or bothers about doing any other punishment sanction? Only ultimately expulsion and being ruined educationally for life! And how does it deter his/her peers when they see a child getting away with ignoring all the punishment sanctions the school can hand out?
