A most interesting case this! I had no idea that ‘informal’ punishments of that sort were ever recorded in punishment books. I wonder if the date is significant? I guess by the 1970s there was quite a bit of debate about school CP and perhaps this particular school thought it best to have everything recorded just in case.

In my ‘Primary’ (then called ‘Infant’ and ‘Junior’) school days in the late 1940s and early 1950s a lot of punishment books would have been filled up if all the classroom administered punishments had been recorded. But I wonder! It really would be interesting to know if such things ever got recorded in those days.

My own suspicion is that the Greenfield Primary School, Oldham, was very much an exception.
