I have often wondered who taught the headmaster how to use the cane, was it at college when he was training to be a teacher or was he caned at school and just followed tradition and caned in the same way? did he decide to cane hands or bottom and did he have a policy book of rules from the education board? Were there any guidelines on caning both boys and girls? I do know from experience that there had to be a witness to a caning, ie another teacher in the room, for boys this could be a teacher male or female but for girls, I believe it had to be a female. canes also had to be ordered and so were made for the job.
