My next visit was several weeks later and I was sentenced to six strokes of the cane the same procedure was followed except that I was the only boy in line and the Headmaster took his time selecting the rod that he was going to cane me with (there were three canes in his cabinet). He flexed the cane, ordered me to bend over, swished the cane as he walked behind me, tapped my bottom three times announced the number of strokes I was going to receive and counted each stroke after administering it. It was this procedure that he followed on my subsequent visits to his study. I have no idea why he counted the strokes from that time onwards but it made the experience more unpleasant, I cannot speak for the other boys he caned but for me, the counting of the strokes made an impact on me.
