I was never in a situation as you were but I can assure you had I been, I would have been very resentful and angry at being in such a situation. I think a lot of these masters, housemasters, deputy headmasters and headmasters were taken with their own power over children and misused their authority tremendously. I think it is likely that a number of them simply enjoyed caning, slippering, spanking the students in their charge and used good discipline as an excuse to either be “big men with a lot of power” or simply enjoy themselves. What I find so odd is how many Old Boys defend the “discipline” to which they were subjected— but of course a lot of thes Old Boys are now spanking fetishist, so that sort of explain some of it.
