All teaching staff were addressed as Sir or Miss regardless of marital status, the exception being the Head who given the full title of Miss , Mr Surname, language teachers Madame or Frau followed by surname,

Like Steve’s mentors a few warranted alternative names .but NOT within earshot.

It was also deemed good manners and punishable if you failed to stand when a member of staff entered the classroom,

Forgot about the standing-we only normally did that if the Head walked in.

However, if we had a lady teacher & the class was there before her, we were encouraged to stand when she entered the room. In my stint as form captain in 3N, I attracted a few stunned looks by leading this, but everyone followed suit with me.

And it put a nervous young temporary teacher completely at ease with a right bunch of toerags!! Which was to everyone’s benefit, because she was no mean Geography teacher. as it happended.
