The one occasion that I recall the process lasting significantly longer was my final caning. It was scheduled (unknown to me) by the Headmaster for after my final exam, for failure to attend detention (I think) immediately before my exams started. The Headmaster, (very kindly!) delayed my punishment until after my exams. In blissful ignorance, I was collected from my German CSE by one of the school secretaries and taken to wait outside his office. I assumed it must be something to do with the PTA, of which my father was either still chair, or at least a member. I remember quickly dismissing the possibility that I was in trouble again as I hadn’t been in school for weeks, other than to sit exams.
