Returning to my specialist subject of corporal punishment in South Korean schools, I have seen many instances of large numbers of strokes, but these tend to be less forceful or use implements with a larger contact area. Corpun has an interesting video clip in which four students receive up to 20 hefty strokes each with a length of aluminium tube weighing about 80 grams. Note on the second student how the dust is beaten out of his trousers as the rod hits. Yet they manage to cope with the punishment. Even if they had the benefit of some padding, which I don’t believe they did – except perhaps a wallet in the back pocket, they are hit pretty hard. But if they were hit with a rattan school cane using the same amount of force, they certainly wouldn’t have coped in the same way.
