I had no problem in accepting the fact that I might be, and was caned. It was just the way things were. This is because I was male, and males were caned as a punishment, girls weren’t male and so weren’t caned. Not much logic in that.
This illogical position was reinforced by an historic macho tradition. If you are male you take your punishment like a man. Without complaint, you bend over and take your caning.
Suppose Rechabit and Jenny are to be caned. Rechabit displays clear signs of distress and doesn’t take his caning like a man. Jenny on the other touches her toes displaying as much equanimity and stoicism as she can muster.
